Cattle grazing expert Matt Brown from Brown Cattle and Country Consultants recently had a quick catch up with Marketing Consultant Gordon Watson to get a better understanding of what motivates him and glean some insights into his burgeoning business.

Matt has grazing in his DNA, ever since he was three years old he remembers how he has just been fascinated by cattle. And today it is artificial insemination and the DNA of cattle that provides his business with a marketing and competitive edge.

Matt heads up Brown Cattle and Country Consultants, providing a range of consultancy services from breeding strategy and marketing plans to land conditioning, monitoring and management as well as artificial breeding, DNA logistics and business planning.

Successful cattle breeding objectives

Cutting straight to the chase we asked Matt, what are the essential components of a successful breeding objective?

Matt said, “Successful breeding objectives involve a balance between genetic potential and environmental adaptability, focusing on traits that enhance cattle productivity and ensure sustainability in diverse conditions. It’s about understanding and meeting market demands while maintaining the health and well-being of the cattle.”

Talking with Matt we quickly learn breeding, marketing, and business planning are intrinsically linked as he explains, “Improving a cattle marketing plan requires a tailored approach. It’s important to identify and target specific markets, highlight the unique qualities of cattle, and use strategic pricing. Effective marketing also involves leveraging various channels, including social media, to reach potential buyers.”

The marketing plan flows from the overall business plan with Matt saying an effective business plan should be robust and clearly outline your goals, operational strategies, financial projections, and risk management tactics. The business plan should be tailored to the unique aspects of your cattle operation to ensure long-term success and sustainability.
An important aspect of Matt’s business is land conditioning and monitoring.

When it comes to land condition reporting Matt and his team can provide a comprehensive land condition report that includes assessments of soil health, water availability, forage quality, and carrying capacity.

Matt says, “This report is crucial in ensuring your land can sustainably support your cattle while maintaining its ecological balance. Sustainability is increasingly important to graziers in environmental, economic terms but can also provide a strategic marketing advantage – especially in key markets both domestically and internationally.”

To measure sustainability, Brown Cattle and Country Consultants evaluate the environmental impacts of an operation, the efficiency of resource use, adherence to animal welfare practices, and economic viability. This holistic approach helps in maintaining a sustainable and profitable cattle operation.

One thing that excites Matt the most is effectively sourcing cattle and the analysis involved matching cattle to specific environmental conditions and breeding goals. Matt said, “It’s important to rigorously evaluate the genetic, health, and productivity attributes of the cattle to ensure they meet your operation’s needs, especially when it comes to AI (artificial insemination) programs.”

Matt adds, “Artificial breeding strategies, like artificial insemination, offer several benefits, including enhanced genetic diversity, improved herd quality, and increased operational efficiency. These methods can significantly advance your breeding objectives.”
